Ground was broken on 17 February 1981 by Spencer W. Kimball, the President of the Church. The temple was dedicated on 3 August 1983 by Gordon B. Hinckley, Second Counselor in the First Presidency. The temple is similar in design to the Apia Samoa Temple and the Nuku'alofa Tonga Temple.
